~~~ BOOTS ~~~
There are two forms of footwear that were worn. (other than bare feet) One is a straight last 18th century shoe (not shown) with some form of metal buckle. These would have been worn with black canvas half gaiters that would have protected the leg and kept debris out of the shoe. Most of the 1st Dragoons however wore “Prussian” style leather riding boots. These were knee high riding boots with a heavy leather extension that came up over the top of the knee for protection. This extension was either sewn onto a pair of regular riding boots or was a seamless integration into the original construction of the boot. Either boot style is acceptable for our dragoon portrayal. New troopers to the unit may find that the cost of purchasing boots may be prohibitive at the early stages. Modern black lace dress shoes covers over by black canvas half gaiters will be acceptable until either period shoes or boots can be obtained. Boots and shoes can be purchased frrm 18th century suppliers.
